Community Building Youth Leadership Club Report - February 2011

The first CBYLC Report from Zorig Foudation arrived in February 2011. The club members held discussions about possible community development projects ideas, and picked 2 project ideas to implement.

1. Recruiting Members

At the beginning of the academic school year, the Ueno seminar students came to school 58 and presented previous years? results and organized a trash clean-up event. In late September, I went over to the school and talked with all three (a, b, v) 11th grade classes about the CBYLC and invited them to join the club.

2. Club Meetings

The first club session was held in early October and had a total of 19 students show up. There were no students present from 11-v grade. Most of the students were from 11-a, which is an advanced mathematics class. The club meetings for the 1st quarter were held on Wednesdays at 1:10pm, which is right after the students finish classes for the day. The 1st quarter ended in mid November and starting from the 2nd quarter, there was a change in the academic schedule of the students and the club meetings were moved to Thursdays at 1:10pm. Starting from the 3rd semester, the number of students was cut from 19 to 13 based on attendance. It was important to keep a good group dynamic, so we decided that it would be best if only the students who have excellent attendance were included in the club going forward with the community development projects. During one of our meetings, the students voted on a club name and decided to call it Leadership club.

Topics of the 16 meetings

  • Introductions and discussion about the concept of ?community?
  • Presentation on Ueno seminar research results
  • Presentation about NGOs, Zorig Foundation, and our Scholarship Program
  • Presentation on how to develop and implement a community development project (2 meetings)
  • Skype session with Ueno seminar students
  • Discussion about possible project ideas (2 meetings)
  • Discussion of student project proposals (2 meetings)
  • Class on how to pick your University major (by ZF scholarship recipient)
  • Presentation on ?what is climate change??
  • Picked 2 project ideas to implement, elected club president, and talk about community responsibility by using littering as a community problem
  • Students divided into 2 groups for the projects, start of project implementation period
  • Discussion about the first week of project implementation and the next necessary steps

Two community development projects

  • The placement of trash cans around the schoolyard and to build a big trash box for nearby community members to dispose of trash instead of in the riverbed.
  • Organizing a weekly social club for elderly residents to gather and get to know one another as well as partake in activities such as playing chess and fitness exercises.

3. Future Activity

The students have 2 months to implement the projects and report on their results. For the next few meetings, I will be checking on their weekly process and providing help in the progress of their project implementation. In addition, the students will come up with a preliminary budget for the implementation of the project. I will modify the budget to fit the needs and will determine on an amount to give the teams for the project. I suspect the budgets will be somewhere between $100 and $200. However, these 2 projects will not be the only activities of the club. The students are encouraged to come up with new project ideas for the club to implement as a big group. So far, the students are looking into possibly starting a project on helping students gain a deeper understanding of the entrance exam and the University entrance process. They will also hold a community clean-up event later in the year as well as create a flowerbed in the schoolyard (or also possibly inside).

4. Classroom Decoration Competition

The students already successfully completed one activity: the decoration of classrooms for the winter holiday season. The club students came up with an idea to have a competition between the 3 11th grade classes on who can decorate their room the best. Upon decoration, 3 ZF staff went to each classroom and decided on the winner of the competition. All 3 classes received 3 cakes and drinks as a present for the New Year. The winning class also received a framed group picture of the students to present to their class teacher at the end of the year.
